Shenzhen, located east by north at the Pearl River Estuary along the central-south coast of Guangdong Province, has a south subtropical monsoon climate due to low latitudes. Subject to profound influence of the monsoon, it is hot and rainy in summer, dominated by the south-easterly winds, sometimes with monsoon low pressure and tropical cyclones; in other seasons the northeast monsoon prevails and the weather is dry. As the affecting cold air weakens, the weather becomes rather volatile, with "abrupt changes between cold and warm temperatures" in spring. Still, strong cold air in early spring might cause cold wave in late February, with some rainfalls at times but mostly with droughts. In summer, under the steady control of the subtropical high, it is often hot and sometimes of extreme high temperatures. With summer also come rich precipitation, varying vastly be-tween regions, local flood disasters, short-term thunderstorms and strong winds. Autumn is the dry season, with plenty of clear and bright sunshine. Yet little rainfall plus heavy evaporation can easily lead to rapidly-developing droughts: nearly every autumn Shenzhen is affected by droughts to varying degrees. Winter often finds Shenzhen in the grip of dry and cold air currents, the lowest temperature and the least precipitation of the year.
